Pakhawaj is essentially a north Indian version of the Mridangam. The pakhawaj also called mardal, pakuaj, pakhvaj and mardala is an Ancient Indian barrel shaped percussion instrument. It is famous in North India. It is widely used for Orissi dancers and sometimes for Kathak. It is the standard percussion instrument in dhrupad.
